Premium Tutorial: Roulette Wheel

Tutorial Preview:

1. Open a new document. Take the Ellipse Tool and draw a circle 201pt x 201pt in dimensions and go to Object > Path > Offset Path and enter the following negative values as shown below to create the smaller circles inside. Duplicate them because you will need them later again.

2. Next take the Pen Tool or the Line Segment Tool and draw a straight line starting from the center of the bigger circle up to the top point. You should have the Smart Guides checked in the View menu. Now you need to divide the bigger circle into 37 small boxes where the numbers will be placed so that means you have to rotate the line 9.73o (360o/37=9.73o). Go to Object > Transform > Rotate, change the angle value to -9.73o to rotate it to the right and press Copy. Then select this second line, switch to the Direct Selection Tool and move it so the bottom point intersects the other point in the center. Do the same until you go all around the circle then group them. Instead of Rotate you can also use Transform Each.

3. Now select the bigger circle and use again Offset Path to create a lightly smaller circle because the red lines have to cross over it otherwise Divide won’t work. Choose only a -1 pt offset value. Select the circle just made and the other one selected in the image below (which is the red one from the first image) and the group of red lines and click Divide from the Pathfinder Panel. Go to Object > Ungroup and you can now fill the 37 small boxes. The colors are not important at this point because you will change them to gradients later. Next select all the remaining lines and the 2 red selected circles (the green and the pink ones in the first image) and click Divide again to obtain other 37 small boxes as the ball pockets. Ungroup and then delete all the other shapes that are there except the boxes.

4. Select both the red and the green circles made at the beginning and click Subtract from the shape area > Expand to obtain the green ring from below then do the same using the pink and the blue circles to obtain the blue ring. Also change the Stroke weight value to 3 pt for the bigger circle.

5. To create the divider lines between each pocket, Copy and Paste in front the first set of pockets (black and red boxes) made earlier. Remove the fill color and give them all a 1 pt green Stroke. Take the Scissors Tool and click on all the 4 corners. This will cut it into 4 pieces and all we have to do is delete the top and the bottom paths as you won’t need them. The example below shows the top and below paths removed leaving the sides behind. Do this for all remaining pockets. Also do the same to create the dividers for the yellow pockets.

6. Apply a 22 pt Offset value to the bigger circle made at the beginning to obtain the larger circle from below then set again a 22 pt Offset value to create one more. Follow the steps from step 2 and draw a line from the center up to the first circle. Rotate it but this time set the angle value to -45o and press Copy. Do this until you have 8 lines all starting from the center.
